Xawery Stańczyk
Researcher, editor, and poet. He obtained his M.A. in cultural studies (2009) as well as a Ph.D. (2015) from the Institute of Polish Culture, University of Warsaw, and an M.A. in sociology (2012) from the Institute of Applied Social Sciences, University of Warsaw. In 2017–2019, he participated in the project “Cultural Opposition: Understanding the Cultural Heritage of Dissent in the Former Socialist Countries” at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. His main fields of interest include youth culture, popular music, social movements, and public spaces in socialist and post-socialist Eastern Europe. Author of Macie swoją kulturę: Kultura alternatywna w Polsce 1978–1996 (2018) (You Have Your Own Culture: Alternative Culture in Poland 1978–1996), nominated for a Jerzy Giedroyc Award in 2018 and recognized as the best Ph.D. in cultural studies in Poland in 2016, he has co-edited monographs Miasto na żądanie: Aktywizm, polityki miejskie, doświadczenia (2014) (City Upon Request: Activism, Urban Politics and Experiences), and Awangarda/underground: Idee, historie, praktyki w kulturze polskiej i czeskiej (2018) (Avantgarde/Underground: Ideas, Histories, and Practices in the Polish and Czech Cultures). He is also the author of two volumes of poetry: Skarb piratów (2013) (Pirate Treasure) nominated for the Nike Award, and Handluj z tym (2015) (Deal with it). He received an art stipend from the city of Warsaw and a Preludium grant from the National Science Centre. He is a member of the editorial team at the Studia Litteraria et Historica journal, a member of the board of the NGO Miasto Moje A w Nim, and a member of the program team for the Festival of Abstract Thought.
